For centuries, Orthodox Christians throughout the world have celebrated this great feast with pilgrimages. In Greece, Russia, Ukraine and many other places, people walk miles — often for days on end to reach certain monasteries and other holy places on this special day.
Here in the Bay Area we are also blessed with a monastery which is dedicated to this feast. Although we will serve the festal vigil on August 14 with all its special hymns here at St. Nicholas, we will make the short pilgrimage to Calistoga for the festal Divine Liturgy on August 15th.
Our flowers and herbs around the festal icon recall the lingering fragrance of the virtues of the Mother of God in the Church.
